Bill suddenly pushed his way in front of me as the hair on the back of my neck just started to stand on end. To my surprise, he called out as he entered the adobe building, “My name is James Butler Hickok, and I am here for Clay Allison!”

As I looked to the right side of the saloon, I saw two men quickly stand, going for their side-arms as they moved. One of the men clearly resembling the man on the wanted poster of the outlaw Allison.

Bill and I went for out Colt revolvers just as Allison and his partner did likewise. Both men drawing fast but not quite quick enough. Bill and I each pulled both of our guns and fired at the same time. The two outlaws were still trying to get their weapons out, each man, dropping to the floor from several gunshot wounds before they could get a shot off.
